E-Learning Development Software

Fifth Dimension has been developing computer based training and e-learning solutions for 16 years. We have worked across a range of digital media as it has emerged and evolved, from the early video-based systems and laser-discs to CD-ROM and today’s increasingly prevalent browser-based applications. During this time, we have worked in many sectors including education, legal, marine, petrochemical and pharmaceutical.

Traditionally, the production of e-learning solutions has often been costly and time consuming due to the specialist skills and labour intensive process involved.

Typical Production Problems

  • Writer and editor may work remotely
    • Review process is not managed efficiently
  • Writer may be unaware of course screen layout and/or functionality
    • Content “does not fit” screen designs - writer redrafts content and/or programming and layout changes as required
  • Content transferred from document to course programme
    • Errors introduced when moving large volumes of content via copy/paste or retyping
    • Programmers are not best suited to enter content, especially when working with foreign languages or technical terminology
    • Inefficient and costly use of programmers’ time
  • High levels of testing and bug fixing
    • Repetitive and time consuming cycle due to the high number of tasks carried out by a small number of people with the required skill sets

Over the years, we have improved the efficiencies within this process through use of best practice and software applications, but fundamental issues remained. In 2004, backed by a Grant for Research & Development from the London Development Agency, Fifth Dimension began work on a prototype application to aid the rapid development of e-learning material.
Several versions later, we have produced a single software application.

The Solution

  • Browser-based Development & Editing Tool
  • All project personnel can access the course throughout development, via the internet, in two modes:
    • Intuitive course editing mode
    • Preview mode
  • Efficient workflow with change control for editors and writers
  • Single code-base and content source across:
    • Editing tool
    • Online product
    • CD/DVD-ROM product
  • Integration with existing LMS or use in-built LMS function
    • Including user profiles & user tracking

The Benefits

  • Shorter project set-up times
    • Up to 50% quicker than traditional CBT/online learning projects
  • Faster course production
    • Up to 50% faster than traditional production process
  • Central management of all course assets
    • Text
    • Media
    • Audio & video scripts
  • Reduced testing cycle
    • Testing can focus on course content
    • No technical testing for each new software build
  • Fewer technical course production skills required
    • Courses can be produced and edited without specialist programming skills
  • Courses can be updated quickly
    • Allows for courses to reflect regulatory legislation

The Technology

  • Online Editing application
    • Flash, MS SQL, FMS
  • Client Playback Online:
    • IE 6, Firefox 2.0, Safari 2 with Flash 8
    • Speakers or headphones (optional)
  • Client Playback:
    • Windows 2000, XP, Vista
    • CD-ROM / DVD-ROM Drive
    • Speakers or headphones (optional)
